Ofsted Report

Ofsted’s report of its recent inspection of Hillsview Academy has now been published and is available on this page.

The report makes quite a number of positive statements about the school, including:

·        Leadership is strengthening through external support, new appointments and support from the Trust;

·        Leaders are improving the quality of assessment across the school, and pupils are making better progress than in previous years;

·        Leaders are taking action to improve attendance;

·        Very few pupils leave without securing their next steps into employment, education or training;

·        Students in the post-16 provision make good progress from their starting points, particularly in vocational subjects;

·        ‘The Bridge’ facility for vulnerable pupils provides a safe haven for pupils where they can develop their personal and learning skills and receive support.

We are disappointed that in spite of these positive statements, Ofsted found that over time, the academy has not made enough progress, and has rated the school ‘Inadequate’.  Both the Academy and AET feel this judgement doesn’t take account of many things that have been put in place over the past year, and which are beginning to drive real improvement at the school.  Although some of these actions are mentioned in Ofsted’s report, and are already having an impact, their full effect will need some time to build.  Furthermore, since it is half a term since the Ofsted inspection took place, the school has already been taking action in many areas covered by its recommendations, particularly around safeguarding, which is always one of our chief priorities.

However,  we want to assure you that we do of course accept that Hillsview still has a long way to go.  We have taken on board all of Ofsted’s findings and have developed a rigorous action plan to address the issues they highlight.  We fully accept that over time, Hillsview has not made enough progress, and we will be redoubling our efforts to bring about continued improvements as we work to create a school of which the students, their families and the whole community can be proud.
